Library Woes

Let me say this first: I love the library.

I mean really, what's not to love? It's a building full of books. You can have (basically) as many as you want. They're virtually free (I pay $5/year for my card). If I don't like a book, I've lost a little bit of time, but no money.

So why the title then? Library Woes. What's that all about.

Well, I live in a relatively small city. At 60 000 people, we have one library branch. And sometimes my library can be really bad at having the books I want.

Now hey, I get it. I really have no idea how the purchasing system for the library works. And it seems really selfish to lament about the library not having everything I want. I am well aware. But sometimes the gaps in the collection are really baffling to me.

For example, Siege and Storm (Grisha #2) by Leigh Bardugo is finally on order for my library system. Ruin and Rising (Grisha #3) which just came out last week is no where to be found in the system. At all. But I've had a hold on Rainbow Rowell's Landline for months--and that doesn't even come out until July.

Or the system will have books missing from a trilogy or series. I've been interested in trying Cynthia Hand's Unearthly trilogy for a while now, but book 1 is marked in the catalogue as "LOST". Meanwhile, book 2 and 3 sit waiting on the shelves. Is the library ever going to order a replacement copy? We just don't know.

There is a silver lining to this story, however. There's this fabulous inter-library loan service that spans the entire province. Meaning that if something doesn't exist in my local library system, but it's in some library in Alberta, I can still get my hands on it.

Yeah, okay, it takes like 2 or more weeks for it to get processed and shipped to me. And yeah, it's due 3 weeks from when it arrives at my home library, not from the day I actually pick it up. And sure, I can't renew it. But still! Any book in the province! Shipped right to my home library for me to pick up and drop off. That's pretty sweet.

So. I love the library. I really do. But like anything there are some disadvantages. I guess I'll just have to keep pestering the library staff with my book purchasing requests!

What about you? Do you use your library? What do you do if they don't have the titles you want? Let's chat in the comments!

I'm a bit quirky because I ONLY read library books. I go to my local library at least twice a week :) My local branch is small but they're good at keeping up with new releases. They're also part of a large system, and I have access to several other library's books through that. Holds usually take less than a week to arrive, unless there's a wait list and then it can be several weeks. But I can't complain because I haven't paid money for books in years :)

Just found your blog and I'm now a new follower through bloglovin!

I find I give library books higher priority over my own books when I take them out because there's that deadline! And there's something about going in and knowing you can take whatever you want out risk-free, hey?

Thanks for stopping by and following!! :)
I must confess I do work in a library, but do you have a request system for new books? If people ask for something we don't have, and it's a relatively new book, or means there's a gap in the series, we just let the librarian responsible for that collection know.

That said, a lot of libraries are now outsourcing Collection Development roles (buying new books etc) and that can really have an impact on the Library Collection. Depending on what kind of service these companies offer, they'll just give every single library the same best sellers every month, but some tailor them more specifically to the profile the Library makes of their clientèle and the company does their best to satisfy the requests.

We actually have a system of some stuff being ordered by the company, but we also keep our own budget to pick and choose a certain percentage of our own. We're also at the mercy of budgeting cutbacks - Rainbow Rowell is a fairly popular author now so they may have decided that she was going to be more in demand?

Anyhoo, I'm gonna quit rambling now. But you should definitely be able to put in requests and hopefully you can get some of the books you're missing.

I have actually done the requesting thing a few times--though only through the online form. I haven't seen any of my requests added to the collection yet, but my sister who has done the same thing has. So I'll just have to keep trying!

Thanks for shedding some light on the process. I think all that behind the scenes stuff is really interesting!
Since living in Ontario, I use both the Toronto and Mississauga library system and they are both fantastic. I didn't get a library card for so long after I moved here because my home province (NS) just didn't have a great library system (much like yours, new titles weren't available and the ones they did have were in disarray or out of order) so didn't think of it... and then I discovered it and I'm obsessed. I'm actually on a library ban right now so I can get some reading done of my own TBR and review copies!
